System software calculates hard disk capacity and free space using binary mathematics (1GB = 1,073,741,842 bytes).  As a result, capacity and free space displayed will be lower than values mentioned in hard disk specifications, which are calculated using base 10 mathematics (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes).  The difference in displayed values does not indicate a difference in the actual number of bytes; however, a portion of hard disk capacity is reserved for system administration, which varies depending upon system software version, and is not available for use.
